It's difficult to imagine our doctors and hospitals profiting from our ailments and illnesses.
However, the recent release of information reveals that they may have been doing just that with the help of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the U.S.
The Law Firm created the below infographic on Big Pharma marketing after a law was passed in the U.S. requiring pharmaceutical companies to disclose money paid to doctors, teaching hospitals and other organizations to push their products on Americans. The result? $3.49 billion in payments in just over a year.
Doctors practicing family medicine, pediatric critical care, orthopaedic surgery, cardiovascular health and neurological surgery earned between $22 million to $43.9 million. The highest spending pharmaceutical company was found to be Genentech Inc., with a total spend of $388 million to 1,888 doctors. Their products are common to many Americans – Valium, Klonopin and Xenical – all of which have adverse side effects ranging from drowsiness to psychosis to severe liver and kidney problems.
The influence of the pharmaceutical companies outlined in this infographic is disturbing, and makes other statistics highlighted no surprise – such as the $1,112 per capita spent on prescription drugs in the U.S., surpassing that of every other country.
With Americans consuming so many drugs, the impact goes beyond health. In 2014, Americans spent $374 billion on prescriptions – up 13% since 2013.
TheLawFirm.com suggests taking a "conservative prescribing" approach as outlined by Dr. Gordon Schiff, which focuses on prevention and lifestyle changes to ultimately help Americans lead a drug-free life. Most importantly however, is to educate the public through initiatives like the below infographic about the harmful effects of taking so many prescription drugs.
