World’s First Self-Driving Grocery Store Hits the Streets of Shanghai, China

Source: Truth Theory | by Amanda Froelich

Introducing the future of shopping, where grocery stores are self-driving, solar-powered and programmed to return to warehouses once they need restocking. Its sounds like a science fiction fantasy, but it's a reality in Shanghai, Japan.

The Wheely's Moby Store might look impressive, but it also serves a functional purpose. As the solar-powered, self-driving market transits around town, it filters smoggy air. And, not only is the store open 24/7, it store features drone delivery.

Developed in cooperation with Himalayafy and Hefei University, the Moby Store is undoubtedly the coolest technology to be unveiled in recent years. Reportedly, the concept was inspired by the same people who designed Wheely's bike cafe.

Customers who desire to shop can save precious time by checking a map to see if a Moby is nearby. Once it arrives, they can easily step in, find what they need, and leave. Because all purchases are automatically tallied, one doesn't even need to spend time at a checkout counter.

Inhabitat reports that all Moby stores have 4 drone pads for quick delivery and the unit uses artificial intelligence to restock inventory. When items are depleted, the store will drive itself back to the warehouse and restock.

Just wait — it gets better. In addition to selling common grocery store items, the Moby store features a coffee shop, an ATM, and first aid devices such as a defibrillator. To ensure every customer leaves happy, a holograph store assistant — aptly named Hol — is programmed to help. Finally, if the store doesn't have what you need, just tell Hol and the item will be in stock next time you step in.
