Dutch Planning to Build Super-Mega Windmill Generator that You Can Actually Live In

Source: Truth Theory | by Amanda Froelich

Inhabitat reports that the Dutch Windwheel was first revealed in 2015 and is planned for Rotterdam. It seeks to transform the city skyline as an eye-catching landmark, as well as set an example for what can be achieved when innovative architects design with the environment in mind.

As can be seen in the photos, the Dutch Windwheel includes apartments, a hotel, space for short-term housing, a cruise terminal, a sky lobby with a restaurant and a commercial and cultural space. Similar in appearance to a Ferris wheel, the invention is to be equipped with movable cabins that transport visitors to the highest point of the structure.

Each cabin has a different theme. For instance, there is a Bar cabin stocked with food and drinks, as well as a Relax cabin for yoga and relaxation. There is even a cabin that goes underwater for closer views of aquatic wildlife. Residents and visitors can use stairs and elevators to tour the Dutch Windwheel.

The exterior will be covered with locally-sourced materials. Additionally, smart plant-covered skin, which reflects unwanted solar heat, allows in natural light and improves ventilation, will be applied to the outside. To make the structure as eco-friendly as possible, the Windwheel will be able to collect and reuse rainwater throughout the building. Additionally, solar panels and wind turbines will be on the premise to capture even more clean, green energy. Finally, organic waste will be collected for biogas production.

To design the Dutch Windwheel, the company worked with a group of innovators, including Arup, Royal BAM Groep, Deltares. Late June, a Green Deal was also signed to improve the project's chance of being realized. Minister Kamp, Provincial Executive member Bom-Lemstra (province of Zuid-Holland) and Alderman Struijvenberg (municipality Rotterdam) all support the Windwheel's development.
