Can we Rebalance the Societal Structure for Change?

Source: Truth Theory | by Rob Howe

We live in turbulent times. Beyond the Trump and Brexit sagas, the refugee crisis has intensified over the course of 2016 and contributed to the tone of outrage and despair voiced by many this year.

It is apparent our society is hierarchically structured and has a patriarchal bias. The veins of inequality which run through our social structure preserve its integrity and is geared towards keeping people in their place. The roots of the issues we face are rarely addressed by the state which is driven by a faith in the free market.

If you are oblivious to or don't feel the strain of this dominance focused social structure then it is likely your privilege is sheltering you from these truths. Or worse, through choice you opt for immaturity of mind, caused by convenience, which is a characteristic crescendoing throughout those countries engaged in the digital revolution.

Our collective trajectory has been caused by a world view which is rooted in dislocation and separation. This is The Old Story. It stems from monarchy and theocracy and a dominant knowledge regime, which Descartes and Bacon were a part, that used science as a means to translate nature into capital. This world view has become engrained in the consciousness of Western perception and only now, when the planet faces crises and is experiencing its sixth mass extinction, have ripples of awakening begun to be detected and civil resistance (rather than social justice) against the dominant power structures begun to be felt and heard.

Tomorrow's world belongs to people who are fighting to redefine 'the good life'. These global citizens, who understand themselves to be globally connected, locally engaged, recognise the desire for financial affluence and material gain to be of significance, only as far as it is needed to function and meet the needs placed upon one within society. These groups of people will be working to connect with themselves, each other and the environment and will fight to break through their socialised passivity. Global citizens recognise the hyper-individualised value system dictated by a saturated social narrative promoting consumption and inadequacy is to be fought against. In place of anxiety, which is the dominant manufactured affect of our age, will be hope and purpose. Already it is budding in the hearts of many.

As Malcolm X in the 60s said, "It's the American political, economic, and social atmosphere that automatically nourishes a racist psychology in the white man." Racism exists, but I quote Malcolm X only to state the nature of the problem which is structural. Because the problem is bigger than any one person it's easy to feel disempowered and even hopeless at the given situation, but we are beings with infinite potential and strength. Just by existing we have significance and everything we do, say and think matters. My friends, the personal is political and civil resistance begins with a shift in our perceptions, but also an understanding that the way we live matters, as much as what we live for. When we come together and begin living The New Story, which is founded upon connection, collaboration and community we begin the process of restorying the world and so begin to alter our trajectory towards a paradigm of sustainability.
